What to Wear in Rainy Weather: A Layering Guide

Whether you’re going out on the trails or a spectator at an outdoor sporting event, adventure doesn’t stop when it’s raining. Staying warm and dry on a rainy, cold day requires strategic layering, but knowing what to wear in the rain can be difficult. Our Outerwear Experts share what layers to wear (or pack) for your rainy outdoor adventure.

The Base Layer

No matter your activity level, start with a base layer. This layer is essential if you’re out in rainy conditions because it helps wick away sweat to regulate your body temperature. There are a few things to consider when choosing a base layer

  • Weight: Base layers come in three different weights depending on the level of warmth you need—light, mid, and heavy.
  • Material: Base layers are typically made from synthetic or Merino wool to help wick away sweat and resist odor.
  • Fit: You want the base layer to fit next to your skin rather than feeling loose to help better regulate body temperature.

The Mid-Layer

After you have your base layer top and bottom, the next layer is your insulating layer, known as the mid-layer. This layer is important in rainy weather because it helps provide you with the right level of warmth. Depending on your activity level and how cold the temperature is, insulating tops can be a fleece zip-up, vest, or softshell jacket. It’s important to note that most rain jackets should be paired with a mid-layer. Insulating bottoms could include a pair of joggers or hiking pants.

The Outer Layer

Last up, you’ll want a rain jacket that provides waterproof protection. When choosing a rain jacket, you’ll want to look for terms like seam-sealed or welded because this construction ensures waterproof protection to keep you dry even in a downpour. An outer layer should provide some level of wind protection too.

You may also want to consider a pair of rain pants for complete protection, especially if you’re hiking or spending extended periods outdoors with little movement.

You can even add a Durable Water-Repellent finish to your outer layer with products from Nikwax.

With these three layers—base, mid, and outer—working together, you’ll stay comfortable, warm, and dry when caught in the rain. Each layer plays an important role in keeping you comfortable from the moisture-wicking base to the insulating mid and waterproof outer.
