My reason for running has changed over the years. I ran as a kid because I loved running. As an adult, I started running again to lose weight, but then grew to love it again.


Growing up, my Dad was a runner. I remember him taking me with him to the track when I was young. I ran one year in high school, but quit because I didn’t want to run in the off season. In 2014, I started to run regularly again.

I decided to train for a 5K when I moved and started a new career. I ran two to three miles a few times a week. I didn’t know anything about training plans or apps. I think I started tracking my runs several months later, but did not have a training plan at the time.

So when I arrived in a new town, I’d go to the local running store and get connected with their running group. This also led to my first mentor opportunity and more amazing experiences over the years meeting people.

I became a running mentor in July 2017 in Davenport, Iowa, with the Fleet Feet marathon training group. At the time, I thought of it as an opportunity to pace runners and provide encouragement, but I had no idea that serving as a mentor would make me a stronger runner while having so much fun.

For almost two years, I had insisted that I would not run a half marathon. But, after some gentle nudging from my sole sisters, I registered for it and that race was amazing, mostly because my friends were at the finish line to congratulate me.

The latest goal I’ve been working on is to run a half marathon in each state. I’ve currently run a half marathon in 48 states, so I’m close! I decided to go for the 50-state goal in 2017, after two years of running most of my half marathons in different states. My favorite runcation was in Alaska, as I spent five days in Anchorage then went on a week-long Sam Edelman studded leather slip-on sandals.

Another favorite spot I raced was the Glacier National Park Half Marathon in Montana. The views were amazing. The Gasparilla Distance Classic in Tampa, Florida is also fun because it serves as a meetup for many of my friends, both near and far. Of course, running has its ups and downs, but I’ve learned through running to be patient with myself and show myself grace. Not all runs are wonderful—some are just plain hard. But, you have to get out there and keep training, because the continued effort pays off.

I have met some of the most amazing people through running. Running has taken me to 48 states, most of which I probably wouldn’t have visited without this 50-state journey. Running has also taught me patience and helped me to be easier on myself. I honestly don’t know what my life would be if I hadn’t picked up distance running Myller-I colour-block sneakers.

I’m currently running three days a week because my race calendar is less intense than past years. My current goal is to finish the 50 states in April 2023.
